Laser Eye Surgery

Eye laser surgery is performed to eliminate myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and, in appropriate cases, keratoconus problems. These problems are among the health problems that make people's daily lives difficult and can greatly reduce the ability of individuals to live on their own. These vision problems, which require the use of contact lenses or glasses for healthy vision, reduce people's comfort in life. The use of glasses in order to continue one's daily life may be an undesirable situation for many people.

In the past years, the use of glasses was considered mandatory for people with refractive errors. With the invention of contact lenses in the following years, this obligation was eliminated. However, people experience various difficulties because contact lenses should be constantly put on and taken off. These lenses may also have some disadvantages compared to the use of glasses, such as making the eye prone to infection.

Laser eye surgery has become safer day by day with technological developments in the field of medicine in the last 20-25 years. Thanks to laser surgery technologies, patients have a permanent alternative to glasses or contact lenses correcting vision defects. Many of these alternatives are popularly known as laser eye surgery.

What is Laser Eye Surgery (Eye Stripping)?

Laser eye surgery is known as general applications aimed at solving vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related nearsightedness).

Laser eye surgery, which can be applied for these reasons and many other reasons is performed with the advice of a doctor, after various examination procedures. Some of the issues to consider here are the suitability of the patient's corneal thickness and shape for treatment. In addition, the patient's age, health history and number of visual defects are also important in deciding whether he or she is suitable for eye laser surgery.

Laser is an extremely powerful type of light. . It is used in many areas of daily life for different purposes such as burning, cutting and evaporation. There is generally no cutting or dividing situation with the light used for the operation. During the procedure, the patient is asked to look fixedly at a certain point, and the laser eye surgery is performed by sending a laser beam pointwise to a certain area on the outer surface of the cornea.

Laser eye surgery is basically the elimination of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia problems with certain conditions by reshaping the cornea, which is the transparent layer that filters light with the help of laser beam. The patient thus achieves clear vision and correct focus.

No Touch VR

With No Touch VR Technology, which was created as a result of joint work with Veni Vidi Göz and Turkish engineers, patients have the chance to experience the surgery with VR glasses before the actual surgery.

Patients who apply to our institution for surgery can see all the steps of the No Touch Laser operation through VR glasses accompanied by our staff. They can see the operating room environment 360 degrees and observe the surgery process from three different points.

Thus, the question marks in our patients' minds are eliminated in the most clear way, while also contributing to them overcoming their fear of surgery.

How is Laser Eye Surgery Performed?

Although there are different applications for No touch laser, LASIK and iLASIK, the general procedure proceeds as follows:

  • The patient enters the area where the operation will be performed and is allowed to lie on his back.
  • The area around the patient's eye is covered with a sterilized cover, leaving one eye open.
  • The eye area is numbed with anesthetic eye drops. The patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.
  • If necessary, the patient can be given a sedative to prevent excitement during the procedure.
  • The drops are administered and the area around the anesthetized eye is thoroughly cleaned.
  • The application is done on both eyes at one procedure.
  • During the operation, a retractor is placed to keep the eyelid open and the operation begins.

Operation procedures differ after the introduction phase for each type of treatment.

No touch laser application, laser treatment is applied to the patient's cornea area for between 50 seconds and one minute, without any contact with the eye.

In the LASIK method, a corneal flap is created using a microkeratome. After the creation of the corneal flap, the laser eye surgery is performed under the removed part.

In the iLASIK method, the incision required for LASIK is created with a computer system. Afterwards, the treatment is performed by sending laser beams to the cornea.

The patient is kept under observation for approximately half an hour after the surgery. Depending on the type of operation performed, blurred vision and a stinging sensation may be experienced in the first few days.

Patients do not need to stay in the hospital after the operation. Patients are discharged immediately within a few hours.

What should be taken into consideration before surgery?

Before laser eye surgery the patient should not use any perfume or make- up to the eyes and surrounding area. In addition, blood thinners should not be used on the day of surgery. Patients who use Contact lenses should stop using contact lenses a few days before the operation. If there are other issues that require special attention to the patient's condition, the doctor will inform the patient about what to do during the pre-operative preparation phase.

Argon Laser

Before the application, the eye is anesthetized with drops. Additionally, the pupil of the eye is dilated. The treatment is performed in an office setting. Argon laser is applied to detect retinal vascular bleeding and retinal tears and to preserve existing vision in case of early diagnosis.

What is laser eye surgery?

YAG Laser

The application is performed in a clinic environment. After cataract surgery, the membrane behind the lens placed in the eye may become dull over time. This dulling is eliminated with the YAG laser procedure.

Glaucoma Laser Treatment – SLT

It can be applied to reduce intraocular pressure in the treatment of

open angle glaucoma. It is applied by the doctor in a very short period of time in the office environment. With SLT, intraocular pressure can be reduced by 30%. It is an alternative treatment method to medication and surgical intervention. It can be applied again if desired.

IPL Laser Treatment

The treatment is carried out in 3-4 sessions, 15 days apart. In IPRL treatment, after a special gel is applied to both eyelids, IRPL laser application is performed on the skin. The application takes about 2 minutes. With the application, clogged glands are opened. The oil layer on the surface returns and thus there is a significant reduction in the complaint of dryness. The patient does not feel any pain or ache during the treatment.

iLASIK (Intralase LASIK)

iLASIK method is performed using wavefront technology and intralase, that is, bladeless method. In addition to the treatment of vision disorders such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia, this method is also used in the preparation of appropriate channels for the rings used in the treatment of keratoconus and in the application of keratoplasty. . The incision required for LASIK is made using controlled femtosecond rays with the help of a computer system. It is possible to create a corneal map of patients with the wavefront technology used in the iLASIK method. Thus, personalized treatment can be applied.

In addition to correcting vision problems, laser treatments are used to eliminate dry eye, glaucoma and retinal vascular problems. These are applications generally performed in the office environment and at the patient's chair. They are not surgeries but are outpatient treatments. The most common of these treatments are:

LASIK

Lasik method is an extremely reliable method that has been used for years. The process begins with anesthetizing the eye tissue using anesthetic drops. In this way, the patient does not feel anything during the surgery. Afterwards, a valve is removed from the cornea using an instrument called a microkeratome. This is called creating a corneal flap. The corneal flap is folded back and removed from the area where the laser will be applied. Excimer laser beams are sent to the tissue under the removed part. LASIK method is a suitable method to eliminate myopia and hypermetropia problems. The patient does not feel any pain during the application. Improvement in vision begins to give satisfactory results within 3-5 days.

No Touch Laser (TranskPRK)

No touch laser can be applied to patients with distance and near vision problems. The procedure, which is initiated by instilling anesthetic drops into the eye, lasts between 50 seconds and 1 minute. There is no contact with the eyes during the procedure. It can also be applied to people who have had cataract surgery before the no touch laser procedure and who are prone to retinal tears, if they meet the appropriate conditions. Finally, it is possible to perform no touch procedure on patients with thin corneas and steep angles. No touch laser procedure does not qualify as surgery since it is performed without contact. In other words, it is not a procedure like cataract surgery.
