Procedures Performed in General Eye Examination
General eye examination is performed to evaluate both our eyes functionally and anatomically for the purpose of preventive eye health and diagnosis of diseases. Functional evaluation of the eyes, vision and non-vision related eye movements and eye alignments, etc. includes processes. The most basic of these processes are as follows;
SUBJECT TITLES
1. Refractive error measurement of the eye
With the autorefractometer device used to measure eye number, it is measured whether there is myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism in the patient's eyes and the most suitable glasses numbers are determined. In some cases, especially in pediatric examinations, a drop is instilled into the eyes to temporarily weaken the eyes' ability to adapt, and autorefractometer measurement is made after waiting for a while.
2. Biomicroscopic Examination
It is not possible to perform an eye examination without a biomicroscope, because it is not possible to examine the eye tissues with the naked eye without magnification. With the help of special devices, the details of the eyelids, conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, iris, lens and retina are examined. If there is a problem, personalized treatment methods are determined.
3. Computerized (Glaucoma) Eye Pressure Measurement
Ocular pressure is measured by spraying clean air into the eye with computer-aided devices. In some cases, eye pressure measurement can be measured manually by your doctor.
4. Visual Acuity Examination
Our ability to see fine details is measured by reading letters, numbers or shapes listed from largest to smallest from a certain distance. Uncorrected visual acuity is the best level of vision an eye has naked, that is, without glasses, lenses, or contact lenses. Corrected visual acuity is the best degree of vision that can be achieved by placing a lens or eyeglass in front of one eye.
During the eyeglass examination, the ophthalmologist places various lenses in front of the eye and determines the lens numbers that provide the best, most comfortable vision to the patient. During this examination, the doctor uses the measurements of the autorefractometer device.
5. Fundus Examination
With this examination, performed with the help of special lenses that your doctor will use, the vitreous, retina, optic nerve and macular degeneration at the back of the eye are examined. The transparency and consistency of the vitreous, the appearance of the retinal vessel, the color of the optic nerve, its borders, its concavity and many other features are evaluated in detail to detect diabetes, hypertension and hereditary diseases, etc. With macular degeneration, age-related macular degeneration, which can be seen especially in people aged 60 and above, can be detected in the early stages. In order for this examination to be performed safely, in some people the pupil is dilated with various drops. These drops cause temporary blurring of vision.
Thanks to a comprehensive eye examination, many vital diseases such as diabetes, brain tumors and MS, as well as eye diseases, can be detected early. As a very important sensory organ, our eyes are our windows to life that we must protect at every moment of our lives and have them checked every year.
